I am nearing completion of a new group of paintings. They will be released soon, after I sit with them a little while longer. These new paintings are my continued response to the landscape, my landscape, here in the Blue Ridge Mountains. I begin my paintings quickly yet finishing can take a long time as I make compositional and color adjustments. Above is pictured three stages of one painting. You may notice that there is little change between stage two and three. That's evidence of my slowing down the process, making careful adjustments after the big sweeping energy at the start. Lately I have been working with a limited palette that includes white, black, transparent yellow iron oxide, quin. fuchsia, and phthalo blue. If I want a bit more brightness or opacity in my yellow I'll throw in some yellow ochre. I love the earthiness of this palette and the range of blues and greens possible. The pinkish color that showed up in this painting gave me something to ponder. Mixed with the same palette, of course, but something different than what I used on the other canvases. A good different? I decided it was and left it in.
And did you know I'm having a sale on selected paintings on paper over in my Etsy shop? Paintings on paper are an affordable way to collect original art!
